The holiday season is supposed to be a time of joy, but leave the house on a weekend prior to Christmas and it’s basically chaos. You’re juggling countless responsibilities, wondering about that gift for so-and-so—have you got enough food?!—and you’re supposed to take care of yourself in the meantime.
And this last point is crucial; carving out moments—even tiny ones—of self-care this festive season, will allow you to shine your brightest and take on even the biggest family celebrations.
This post is dedicated to you, the overstretched superheroes managing absolutely everything.
Here’s how to self-care at Christmas like a pro:
1. Breathe
How can you integrate mindful breathing into your daily routine, especially during hectic moments? Can you escape gatherings when it’s all a little too much for a brief breathing exercise?
In the midst of holiday chaos, take a moment to pause and breathe. Mindful breathing is a simple yet powerful way to centre yourself, manage stress, and down-regulate your nervous system (exactly the opposite of what everything else is doing for you). Find pockets of tranquility, even if it’s just for a few breaths, to reset and recharge. I recommend this breathing technique for quick moments of you-time.

2. Yoga breaks for renewal
What quick and effective yoga poses can you incorporate into a busy schedule? Can you commit to a short yoga routine before or after festive events?
Embrace the magical power of yoga by integrating short and accessible routines into your day. Whether it’s a gentle stretch in the morning or a few poses before bedtime, a mini yoga break can provide a much-needed sense of calm. Try this short session from inside my membership, The Yoga Revolution—perfect when you’ve got less time.
3. Moments of mindfulness
How can you bring mindfulness into family traditions without disrupting the festive spirit? Can you encourage mindful activities like gratitude sharing during holiday gatherings?
Try infusing mindfulness into family Christmas celebrations by incorporating simple yet impactful practices, like gratitude sharing, or suggest a brief mindfulness exercise before diving into the festivities. These small adjustments can foster a sense of connection and presence, whilst also maintaining our own sense of calm.
4. Time for yourself
How can you communicate your need for personal time during the holidays? Can you schedule moments of you-time to recharge without feeling guilty?
Prioritise self-care by gifting yourself moments of alone-time—it’s more important than you think. Communicate your need for personal time to your loved ones. People will not only understand more than you realise, but you’ll also be setting healthy boundaries and providing everyone with a positive role-model. This will allow you to recharge and fully engage in the holiday celebrations with refreshed energy.
Within your alone-time, try practicing yoga, reading a good book (I recommend your favourite non-fiction), or listening to a good podcast (and obviously I recommend my own).
The takeaway
As the holiday whirlwind approaches, remember this: taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity. By incorporating mindful practices like breath-work, quick yoga breaks, and moments of solitude, you can navigate the festive season with grace and presence.
